While I love big productions, I also love bare bones image making. Producer/Director Nathan Marcus tapped me to shoot a short branded collaboration between Paper Magazine and All Birds and Maria Cornejo. We had some access to do a traditional documentary with Maria plus a more experimental BTS-style piggyback shoot on the editorial photo shoot at Dune studios.
Through my wife and mentor, I knew that fashion studio shoots are fast-paced. People are often flying around, the photographer’s camera is tethered to a computer, stylists and make-up artists are running around. The set is constantly changing. My main goal with this was to minimize my footprint so I could move through this crazy environment and capture as much authenticity as possible. I also knew that I’d be relying on the photographer’s modeling lights which are very dim so I’d need a lot of stop to get a good image.
I elected to use the RED Gemini for its low light capabilities and paired it with Zeiss Mark2 Super Speed lenses - primarily relying on the 35mm but also the 50mm and the 85mm. I opted to forego any sort of stabilization except for a lightweight tripod.
I’m extremely happy with how this short film turned out.
